![]() ![]() If you want to get extra weird, you also gain access to superhuman powers like a powerful AoE ground pound or the ability to enter a frenzied rage and tear zombies apart with your bare hands. There’s even special options depending on which character you’re playing, which play into their particular strengths. ![]() By the end, a wide variety of options are available to customize your character to fit the playstyle you favor, which in my case was optimizing my attack speed to be ultra fast and making counter-attacks following perfect parries as devastating as possible. – Greg Miller, SeptemScore: 8Īnother thing that keeps combat fresh is a steady stream of passive perks and active abilities that unlock as you progress through side quests and stories. ![]() Here on the other side of a 25-hour playthrough – where I skipped a lot of side quests after Act 1 – I'm anxious to get back into Dead Island, and despite the game's flaws, that's not something I say often. There is a huge world to explore, thousands of zombies to kill, and tons of side quests to take. It's got visual bugs, the controls take a bit to feel normal, and the presentation in general isn't up to snuff. Making Hollywood’s red carpets even redder by applying generous helpings of gore was laugh-out-loud funny and time generally well-spent.ĭead Island probably won't win any game of the year awards. But even though it lacks originality, Dead Island 2 still competently executes on its over-the-top, LA-based zombie parody and injects some much-needed botox into a series that’s been languishing for far too long. But aside from its balls-to-the-wall silliness and considerable comedy chops, there just isn’t much to it that hasn’t been done better in a dozen other zombie-filled games since the original Dead Island came out more than a decade ago, including and especially Dying Light 1 and Dying Light 2 (which, notably, were made by Techland, the studio that created Dead Island). On one hand, Dambuster Studios has delivered a charming and hilarious apocalyptic sequel to the 2011 original that’s littered with great one-liners and dismembered body parts in equal measure. Finally, while the main story revs up too slowly, the DLC’s finale came with a jaw-dropping twist I honestly did not see coming - and more than made up for the base game’s lackluster ending.Like an Orange County socialite, Dead Island 2’s great looks and seemingly ideal first impression belies a striking lack of imagination. Other quests, like diving through a claustrophobic underwater cave or going on a treasure hunt for antique revolvers, not only showcase Dying Light’s diverse missions, but give you ample opportunities to flex your free-running parkour skills in between driving the countryside, recalling what made Dying Light such a memorable zombie game in the first place. ![]() But happily, the sheer amount of things you can do won me over by never feeling like a chore - even when you’re literally raiding the post office to deliver forgotten letters. The concept of forcing you to do side quests in order to progress with the story could have easily gone South (as it has in many other games that seek to pad out their stories), and here it had trouble hooking me at the start. Or, you can competitively race with up to three other players.Ībove: Watch the Bounties trailer. The real meat of this expansion comes from The Following’s array of quality quests that follow Kyle Crane seeking gain the trust of the locals to get close to a creepy cult. Cooperative play capitalizes on this with the ability to climb in the back of another player's ride to pick off incoming viral zombies with ranged weapons like the new crossbow, which is ideal for quickly picking off bandits and zombies alike with satisfying headshots. Keeping the car in good working order breathes new life into Dying Light’s already expansive scavenging game, as cars littering the freeway - once only good for a quick glance in the truck - are now a potential gold mine for salvaging engines and siphoning fuel.Īs you level up your driver rank, you’ll gain access crafting better parts, install new reinforced cage parts to show off collectible paint jobs, and even turn your ride into a zombie-killing machine with ram bars, flamethrowers, and mine dispensers. Drive over anything other than a well-paved road, for instance, and your suspension and tires will slowly get worn out. Like your trusty but breakable weapons, the buggy is made up of several craftable and lootable parts that will break down over time in day-to-day zombie-killing use. While it’s rarely outright required for taking on any of the main story missions or the large amount of side quests, I never wanted to be far from it. “It’s due to this spread-out and hazardous environment that the buggy's versatility really shines. ![]()
